Seniors Jaxon Naviaux and Marshall Koch were named Scholar of the Year and Athlete of the Year, respectively, by the national Sigma Nu fraternity organization.
Two members of Rose-Hulman's Beta Upsilon chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity were honored by the national fraternity organization for their excellence in the chapter and throughout their collegiate pursuits. Seniors Jaxon Naviaux and Marshall Koch were honored during Sigma Nu's Grand Chapter in San Antonio, Texas, earlier this summer.
Naviaux, a computer engineering major from Tell City, Indiana, was named the Sigma Nu Scholar of the Year in recognition of his excellence in scholarship. A proud captain of the Rose-Hulman football team and current commander (president) of the campus Sigma Nu chapter, Naviaux worked as a Java programming teaching assistant and has completed internships at ECS Solutions and Reliable MicroSystems. He has also served as the social chairman for the Lilly Scholars Network chapter and is a member of Tau Beta Phi honor society.
In nominating Naviaux, Associate Dean of Student Affairs Ryan Brimberry said, "[Jaxon's] work ethic is second to none, and it shows both on the playing field and in the classroom. Not only is Jaxon a strong contributor on the football field, but what is equally as impressive is the academic success that he has seen at our Institute."
Koch, a native of Omro, Wisconsin, was named the Sigma Nu Athlete of the Year. He is pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a simultaneous master's degree in engineering management through the Rose Squared program. Koch is also a captain on the Rose-Hulman football team and has twice been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the week and received DIII National Team of the Week Selection. In 2024, Koch was named the Rose-Hulman Football Defensive Player of the Year. He served Sigma Nu first as alumni relations chairman, then as the commander in the 2024-25 academic year.
In nominating Koch for the award, Rose-Hulman Football Defensive Coordinator Jeffery Stanton said, "In my nine years of coaching and educating, I have encountered numerous players and coaches with talent and passion. Marshall, however, is near the top of the list."
Stanton continued, "While other players may be happy doing the minimum or letting their teammates do enough to just get by, Marshall does not…[He] helps drive others to reach their full potential by pushing them on the field, in the classroom, in the weight room, and in the community."
Rose-Hulman's Sigma Nu was the only chapter in the nation to be awarded two of the four major national awards. Sigma Nu is one of 11 Greek organizations at Rose-Hulman. More than one-third of Rose-Hulman students are affiliated with Greek life, with fraternity rush occurring annually during fall quarter.
