Graduate Courses

Graduate courses are included in the section of Course Descriptions in the catalog.

An undergraduate student who wishes to take 12 hours or less of 500-level courses for graduate credit may do so, subject to the following conditions

  1. The student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or better.
  2. Up to 12 credit hours of 500-level coursework from the BS degree, which are approved by the head of the department offering the graduate degree and the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning, can be counted toward the graduate degree for students who are pursuing established concurrent undergraduate/graduate pairings.
  3. The student must request permission to receive graduate credit prior to enrollment in the course. To do this, the student must complete the online Graduate Credit Enrollment Form. The form will be electronically routed for the appropriate approvals. A separate form should be submitted for each course in which the undergraduate desires to enroll for graduate credit.

The student's official graduate transcript will show that the course was taken for graduate credit at Rose-Hulman. However, it must be understood that this does not constitute acceptance to any graduate school, nor does it guarantee that the course will be accepted for graduate credit toward any graduate degree plan. An undergraduate student who wishes to take more than 12 hours of graduate courses must enroll in the graduate program.

For information on this option see Concurrent Pursuance of the B.S. and Master’s Degrees.

Eligibility to Participate in Commencement

Project or Thesis Graduate Degree-Seeking Students

To be eligible to participate in Commencement, project or thesis, graduate degree-seeking students must have completed their final oral examination by the Friday of the sixth week of the Spring Quarter and completed all the requirements for the graduate degree by the Friday of the eighth week of the Spring Quarter.

Students completing their degree requirements in the Summer or Fall Quarters are eligible to participate in the Spring Commencement as “Anticipated Summer Completion” or “Anticipated Fall Completion.” In consultation with the student’s Committee Chair, the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning will inform the Registrar’s Office if a student will participate in Commencement and the appropriate anticipated quarter of completion.

Project or thesis graduate degree-seeking students participating in Commencement will be individually hooded on the platform as they are recognized for their degree. In addition, graduates for the entire academic year will be listed by name in the Commencement Program, along with their project or thesis title.

Course-based Graduate Degree-Seeking Students

A course-based graduate degree-seeking student may participate in Commencement if they have completed all graduation requirements for their program of study by the end of the Spring quarter.

Additionally, course-based graduate degree-seeking students can participate in Commencement as a Summer or Fall Completion. The following sections outline the criteria.

Summer Completion

A course-based graduate student who, at the end of the Spring quarter, has two or fewer courses [eight credit hours or less] to complete graduation requirements and who, by the judgment of the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning, has a reasonable expectation of completing those courses in the Summer quarter, may participate in Commencement and be designated in the Commencement Program as an “Anticipated Summer Completion.”

Fall Completion

A course-based graduate student who, at the end of the Spring quarter, has five or fewer courses to complete graduation requirements [twenty credit hours or less] and who, by the judgment of the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning, has a reasonable expectation of completing those courses by the end of the Fall quarter, may participate in Commencement and be designated in the Commencement Program as an “Anticipated Fall Completion.”

In consultation with the relevant Department Head, the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning will inform the Registrar’s Office of students with anticipated Summer and Fall Completions who will participate in Commencement.

Note: Summer and Fall Quarter completions (graduates) will be considered members of the class graduating in the Spring of that calendar year.

Graduate Degree Regalia

Students who plan to participate in Commencement should contact the Rose-Hulman Bookstore to purchase their regalia no later than Friday of the eighth week of the Spring Quarter.

Diploma/Letter of Completion Upon completing all graduate degree requirements, the Registrar will provide a letter of completion and official transcripts.

Graduates who complete all graduate degree requirements and choose not to participate in Commencement will receive their diploma(s) by mail. Additionally, Summer and Fall completions will also receive their diploma(s) by mail.
