Have Your Family’s Finances Changed?
Sometimes families experience unexpected changes that can affect their ability to pay for college. If your family has had special circumstances, you may be eligible to request a review of your financial aid using updated information instead of the federally required data used for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
To be considered, you must have already submitted the FAFSA.
If your Student Aid Index (SAI) is 0 or below, you are already receiving the maximum need-based aid available from Rose-Hulman and do not need to complete the Special Circumstance process.
How and when do I apply?
Complete the Special Circumstance Form and submit the required documentation to the Financial Aid Office via fax, postal mail, or in person.

You may request a special circumstance review at any point in the academic year, as circumstances may change at any time.
Please note:
- The review process may take 4–6 weeks.
- Special Circumstance submissions for the upcoming school year will not be reviewed until after Financial Aid Notifications are released to returning students in mid-June.
- All professional judgment appeal decisions are final.
