What is Constitution Day?
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787.  It honors the delegates of the Constitutional Convention who created the framework of government, the adoption of the Constitution as the supreme law of the land, and the principles of democracy, rights, and freedoms it established.

Constitution Day is also sometimes called Citizenship Day, recognizing the responsibilities and rights of all U.S. citizens.

In 2004, Congress passed a law (Public Law 108-447) that requires all federally funded educational institutions - from elementary schools to colleges and universities - to recognize Constitution Day.  Students are encouraged to learn about the history and importance of the Constitution, reflect on citizenship, civic responsibility, and democracy.

The Constitution is not just a historical document, but a living framework that still shapes daily life and government.
