 How the seminar will work

Course goal:  investigate “what doing research” is all about.
We’ll accomplish that by simulating life as a computer science graduate student in a research group studying machine game-playing.

To do that, we will do 2 projects, each lasting about 5 weeks.
We'll divide into teams of six or seven (I'll pick the teams, with your input.)  Each team will, for each project:

  1. Meet with me to discuss several journal articles on a particular topic.  Every team member reads the articles, each team member presents some portion of the articles.

  2. Identify research questions that arise from the reading.

  3. Design a mini-research project that will answer some of those questions by applying the ideas in the articles to a particular game.

  4. Carry out the mini-research project.  (Write code, run experiments.)

  5. Report results from the mini-research project.

Prerequisites:  CS 413 (Artificial Intelligence), or my permission.
