How to Apply for Financial Aid

The only application that Rose‑Hulman requires to be considered for need-based financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You will need the Rose‑Hulman Federal School Code when you fill out the form: 001830. You may fill out the FAFSA after October 1. Indiana Residents must apply before March 10th to be considered for State of Indiana aid.

About FAFSA!

The FAFSA is a confidential assessment of a family's ability to pay for a student's college education. This collection of personal and financial data is used to establish a family's expected contribution to college costs. The contribution figure is subtracted from the total expense of the college to determine the types and amounts of need-based financial aid for which the student is eligible. You may fill out the form online by using the link in the paragraph above. To sign the FAFSA online, you and one parent must have a PIN. You can apply for your PIN online.

You do not need to fill out the FAFSA if you wish to be considered only for merit-based scholarships from Rose-Hulman or outside organizations.

Helpful hints on the FAFSA:

We encourage students and parents to file the FAFSA online because it's fast (you'll receive your results 7-14 days earlier than if you mail a paper FAFSA), easy and secure.

We encourage students and parents of dependent students to apply for a PIN (personal identification number) and to use the PIN as the electronic signature when filing your FAFSA online. Both the student and one parent need their own PIN.

File online or mail the FAFSA after January 1. The federal processor must receive the FAFSA before the April 15 deadline to be considered for State grants for residents of Indiana.

We recommend printing a copy of the FAFSA Pre-application Worksheet and completing all information before completing the application online. Keep a copy of your application for your records. (Do not complete and refer to a copy of the paper FAFSA, as the order of the paper FAFSA does not correspond with the online FAFSA.)

You do not need to file your federal income tax return with the IRS before you file the FAFSA. However, we highly encourage you to do so. You may estimate on the form and correct it when you complete your taxes.

When applying online, print out the confirmation number provided at the end of your submission and provide an e-mail address to the federal processor when asked. You will be notified when your application has been processed. When mailing a paper FAFSA, obtain a Certificate of Mailing from the post office to verify the date your application was sent to the processor. (Do NOT send the FAFSA by registered mail.) Keep your confirmation number or certificate of mailing with a copy of your application and PIN for future reference.
