Experiential Learning

Scientists who are at the forefront of solving some of the world’s toughest challenges do so through hands-on research. Our state-of-the-art labs, project space, classroom facilities and academic buildings are designed to let you focus completely on your research and learning. We believe in learning by doing, and our labs and research facilities are well suited for that purpose. As a biology major, you’ll conduct real research in labs starting in your first year in college. Our greenhouse, cell biology laboratory and tissue culture laboratory are just a few of the dedicated spaces for undergraduate research. The Hulman Farm field campus makes it possible for students to conduct field work early in their academic career. You will learn skills inherent to biology — how to create new knowledge, ask interesting questions, and analyze and present results.

Learning Through Excellence

Excellence in teaching is at the heart of Rose-Hulman’s mission. Our faculty members are hired for their teaching skills and their willingness to work one-on-one with students. Biology majors work closely with our expert faculty who help you become a seasoned researcher and build the skills relevant to working in industry. Biology majors also develop a foundation of math and calculus, while supplemented by humanities classes to complement your education. Our programs also allow flexibility to pursue independent learning projects in your chosen area of concentration, tailoring your education to your interests!

Senior Thesis

A unique feature of our biology program enables all biology majors to complete a year long independent research project pursuing an original research question. This experience closely matches the research flow in a master's or PhD program, giving students ownership over the work and preparing them to excel in future research oriented careers, providing them a leg up on biology majors from other institutions. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, you'll gain valuable experience in the various steps in the research process, including: Preparing a research proposal, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and presenting research.

Biomedical engineering at Rose-Hulman

Biomedical engineers help develop solutions for treating and diagnosing disease, as well as for helping people with disabilities.

As a biomedical engineering major at Rose, you’ll have the opportunity to customize your upper-level electives to help you pursue your professional goals. Our biomedical engineering program features an extensive design component. You’ll work with skilled faculty on developing the highly sought-after skills in industry. Our program has been ranked as one of the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

We also offer a biochemistry and molecular biology second major or minor, and many of our grads have gone on to medical school.

Many of our graduates find careers designing medical devices, conducting research, or even working as accident reconstruction engineers. It’s an exciting field combining the principles of engineering with the biological life sciences. 

Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (Second Major Only)

A second major in biochemistry & molecular biology is a strong supplement to any life sciences program. This second major provides the background and understanding necessary to open up career possibilities in the natural and life sciences fields.

Bill Weiner

Bill Weiner

Dr. Bill Weiner is an expert in circadian rhythms, the sensory processing of neural systems and invertebrate vision. He enjoys teaching and trying to maximize each student’s potential. His efforts were recognized by the Princeton Review, being listed among the Best 300 Professors in America book. He also has been recognized among the outstanding professors on campus and spent a year helping examine how to incorporate engineering design concepts into the institute’s curriculum.
