Student insurance options

All registered students are required to show proof of health insurance. Beginning with the Fall quarter of each academic year, the student insurance premium will be added to the invoice. Current students can waive this premium by completing the insurance waiver form found in the Banner system. Parents should consult the parents pages for forms and answers to questions. This waiver must be completed at the beginning of each academic year. Students participating in the COOP or Studies Abroad programs must also show proof of insurance.

Student accident/illness coverage

Rose-Hulman Accident and Illness insurance is underwritten through Commercial Travelers. Policy brochures, Network Physicians, HIPAA compliance forms, claim forms, claim status, as well as contact information, can be found on the carrier’s website Student Plans Center. The policy is a twelve (12) month policy, billed in three quarterly installments, and runs from August 25 until August 25 of each school year.  Summer coverage is automatic when the student is enrolled for the spring insurance coverage. If a student needs summer only coverage, please contact the manager of Insurance and Risk Management for further details.

  1. Once at the carrier’s site, scroll through the college list and select either Rose-Hulman Domestic or International Student. Click on the submit button.
  2. You are now taken to the “Welcome” page. On the left hand side of the page are links to others areas within the site.

Rose-Hulman Accident/Illness Insurance is automatically charged to all students at the start of each school year. Domestic students ONLY are permitted to waive the Rose-Hulman insurance fee; International students are not permitted to waive the student insurance fee.  In order for a U.S./Domestic student to waive the student insurance fee, the student and/or parent will need to process an online waiver at the startof each school year. The waiver will require the name of the insurance company/carrier, policy number, and group ID. A policy expiration date is only required if the other insurance in place is a COBRA policy or a accident/illness type of insurance. Insurance waivers DO NOT carry over from year to year. If the student has other health or accident/illness insurance and does not need the RHIT coverage, an electronic waiver must be completed eachschool year. Instructions on how to waive coverage can be obtained by reviewing “How to Waive Student Insurance.” *   The online waiver form is accessible from July 25 until the start of spring quarter, each school year.

Insurance coverage can be added or deleted (waived) at the start of any quarter. Any waivers or additions submitted after the start of a quarter will be applied to the following quarter. Insurance charges cannot be pro-rated, backdated or removed from the student’s account after the start of the quarter.

The Rose-Hulman Accident/Illness policy is an excess policy that will pay eligible expenses after anyother collectable insurance has been exhausted. The bills incurred by the student must first be submitted to the family’s insurance policy for reimbursement.

Insurance cards along with an insurance packet are sent to students by campus mail in late September/early October each year. As long as the student has been billed for student insurance coverage in spring quarter, they will have coverage in place through the summer months.
