Record Number of Companies Flock to Recruit Students for Full Time, Internship Opportunities
March 20, 2014
Land Of Opportunity: Companies filled the Sports and Recreation Center’s fieldhouse for the opportunity to recruit students for full-time, internship, and co-op positions at one of the three career fairs conducted on campus each school year.
A record setting number of companies from throughout the country has come to campus this academic year to interview prospects for full-time employment, internship, and co-op opportunities. This has helped approximately 70 percent of the Class of 2014 know where they will be starting their post-college careers.
A total of 335 companies have attended the first two campus career fair events, an increase from the previous record 302. And, an all-time high 85 companies are expected at the spring fair on April 16.
“Some of our 2014 graduates accepted job offers last fall, others received offers during the holiday season, and others are still reviewing their options,” says Kevin Hewerdine, director of career services and employer relations. He expects the Class of 2014’s job placement rate to be at 95 percent by the institute’s May 31 commencement. “Students majoring in computer science, electrical engineering, and computer engineering were once again in high demand.”
Several students had multiple job offers to consider. These students were highly sought because of their proven job skills, gained from completing more than two internships during their college careers. The Office of Career Services reports that 80 percent of the Class of 2014 had two or more internship experiences.
Looking ahead, General Electric Company has hired nearly 30 undergraduate students for summer internship experiences, with approximately half of the students being freshmen, according to Hewerdine.
The starting salary for 2014 Rose-Hulman graduates should be higher than last year’s $63,075 average. (It is at $69,230 on March 19, 2014.)
