Civil & Environmental Engineering

A civil engineering degree will provide you with the knowledge and technical ability to perform essential engineering functions in the design, management and construction industries, among others. As a civil engineer, you can expect to work with public works in some capacity.

Our structural engineering master’s program is designed to give you additional insights into the challenging and versatile profession of civil engineering. The one-year, course-based program focuses on structural engineering. However, there are alternatives if you are interested in a multi-year, thesis-based master of science civil engineering program.

A minor in environmental engineering expands your preparation for designing systems to safely treat the waste products created by society.

You may pursue either a course-based master of environmental engineering degree or a project-based master of science in environmental engineering. 

A minor in sustainability provides hands-on experiences for student teams working on real-world problems related to sustainability. This could include design projects, scientific research, modeling-based projects, or studies to improve campus sustainability. Students in the program will also have the opportunity to examine, analyze, and reflect upon sustainability as it relates to their project or research work.

In the lab, you’ll use equipment such as the stream table to apply theories and principles that address issues of flooding.

Between innovative laboratories and access to outdoor landscapes, there are many opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience while on Rose-Hulman’s campus. In the new Modular Learning Lab, students examine how structures behave and fail. In the Structures Lab, students apply computer and strain guage technology to their projects, while the Ecological Systems Laboratory is designed for students to conduct research and outreach activities related to sustainable water quality. Students can also research water quality in the Lost Creek – South Fork watershed.
