MA111- Rickert - Gateway exam information

All MA111 students are required to pass a Gateway exam before midterm. Failing to do so results in a grade of F in MA111. The exam consists of ten questions. You may use only your brain, a standard pen or pencil, and an eraser. Each question is graded correct or incorrect. To pass the exam you must get at least 9 correct.

The first Gateway will be given in class Monday, September 5. Subsequent Gateway exams will be given on Wednesdays and Mondays in the Learning Center no later than 4:00PM. The Learning Center is located at the lower level of the Logan Library. (see map) You should go to the desk and ask for the Precalc Gateway Exam for Professor Rickert.

Gateways are offered 8:00AM-4:00PM Mondays and Wednesdays.

If you do not pass either the first or second Gateway you must go to the Learning Center for some tutoring before you may make another attempt. Dr. Evans will also be having some review sessions Tuesday, September 6, and Thursday, September 8 period 10 in G219 and G221. The review sessions count as Learning Center visits.

Each Gateway exam counts as a quiz grade. If you have already passed the Gateway, you automatically receive a 10 on that Gateway quiz.
For example: Student 1 gets a 9 on the first Gateway. This is a pass and the student no longer needs to take the gateway. The scores for this student on the gateway quizzes as 9-10-10-10-10 - 10-10-10-10-10 (99 out of 100).
Student 2 gets a 7 on the first gateway, a 7 on the second, missed the third, gets an 8 on the fourth and a 9 on the fifth. The student passes the fifth Gateway and has Gateway scores of 7-7-0-8-9 - 10-10-10-10-10 (81 out of 100).
Student 3 gets a 2 on the first Gateway, then a 3, a 4, a 5, a 6, and five more 6's. The total is 50 out of 100, but the student has not passed the Gateway and has an F for MA111.
Student 4 gets an 8 on the first gateway, a 9 on the second, but misreads their grade, takes the third and gets an 8. Since they've already passed the Gateway their Gateway scores are 8-9-10-10-10 - 10-10-10-10-10 (97 out of 100).

For each Learning Center Gateway Exam: If all students in both of my sections (period 8 and 9) who have not passed the Gateway show up and take the Gateway, then everyone gets an extra 5 points on a 5 point quiz. For example Student 1 above has 99 out of 100, but for each of the 9 Learning Center Gateways every student who has not passed takes the Gateway. This adds nine 5 point quizzes, so Student 1 now has 144 out of 145.
