Course Description: This course is designed to provide you with a basic understanding of how politics and government works in numerous countries. It is also intended to introduce you to the primary concepts and theories of comparative political analysis. Each week we will explore the politics of a different country. In addition, on Fridays we will conduct hands-on exercises which will allow you to explore core political puzzles and address important policy issues facing many nations.

ASSIGNMENTS: Your grade in the course will be based on the following:

A. Weekly Tests (3% each; 30% total): As we will be covering a different country each week, we will start class on each FRIDAY with a test on the lectures and reading for that week. Tests will consist of assorted objective questions (multiple choice, short answer, fill-in-the=blank, etc.) and will be anywhere from 10-20 questions long.

B. Papers (10 % each; 20%): You must write TWO papers related to the countries being studied (paper questions will be handed out separately).  Your papers may be turned in at any time, but your first paper is due no later than Friday, December 22 (at the start of class) and your second paper is due no later than Friday, January 26 (at the start of class). Additionally, your papers can be revised and resubmitted for regrading. You must, however, include the original paper with my comments and you will only receive a higher grade if the revised version shows a substantial improvement over the original. Paper revisions are due no later than Friday, February 9 (at the start of class). Complete details of the assignment will be handed out separately.

 C. Midterm and Final Examination (20% each; 40% total): The midterm exam will be given on Monday January 15.  The Final Exam date will be determined by the Registrar. As the weekly tests will focus more on objective questions, the midterm and final will deal more with conceptual issues and essays which require you to analyze, compare, and contrast the countries covered in the course. You will be given a study guide for each exam.

 D. Class Attendance and Participation (10%): Regular attendance and active participation in this class are the minimum requirement for getting a good grade in this course regardless of your performance on written work

NOTE: Links to the PowerPoint slides for the lectures and test terms will be added as the course progresses.
