Women’s soccer regionally ranked; knocks off DePauw 2-0

Tim Boyer

With a great start to the season and a big 3-1 victory over HCAC defending champion Transylvania, the women’s soccer team has received a regional ranking from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The women jumped into the number seven spot out of ten, trailing nationally ranked teams such as Denison University (Ohio) and Wittenberg University (Ohio) with one of the two Engineers’ loses coming from Wittenberg. The Women’s Soccer Team has also received recognition from D3kicks.com, claiming the number six spot in the Great Lakes region.

The Fightin’ Engineers also made history this past Wednesday as they defeated DePauw for the first time in the program’s history. Rose took home the 2-0 victory with goals coming from seniors Julie Roebel and Jennifer Gordon. Roebel, a civil engineering major, scored in the first half and Gordon, a biomedical engineering major, secured the win with a goal in the second half. The Tigers came close a couple times with one shot bouncing off the crossbar but failed to get one past senior goalkeeper and biomedical engineering major Rachel Miller. The Engineers now stand 9-2 overall, 3-0 in the HCAC.

So far this season, the Fightin’ Engineers have outscored their opponents 32-11, with major contributions from Roebel and freshman civil engineering major Molly Richardson who have scored an impressive eight and nine goals, respectively. Many of the goals came off set-ups from Gordon with nine assists and senior mechanical engineering major Sarah Graber with four assists. The Rose-Hulman defense has held a strong wall against the opposition, only letting in 11 goals in 11 games, giving the Engineer defense a 1.00 Goals Against Average. Goalkeeper Rachel Miller has earned a 0.85 GAA with 37 saves in 851 minutes of play.

Another key match-up comes tomorrow when the Fightin’ Engineers take on the Lady Spartans of Manchester, another challenger for the HCAC crown. The showdown starts at 11 a.m. at Jim Rendel Field. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of time for you to stay for the whole game and then go enjoy the football game at 2 p.m.
