Greek organizations clean campus in preparation for alumni, guests

Guest Writer

The semi-annual Greek Brush Up for Homecoming, a concentrated effort to beautify campus, took place this past Saturday. This event traditionally takes place the weekends prior to Homecoming and Commencement. This effort is taken on by the Greek community in order to assist facilities in completing the various tasks to beautify the campus, since they do not have the approximately 300 man-hours required to do so. According to Peter Leigh, a sophomore electrical engineer, it also helps Greek members “realize their ties to the Rose community.”

Greek Brush Up for Homecoming began early Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. with the arrival of representatives from the eight fraternities and three sororities. The Greeks were welcomed by President Gerald Jakubowski and Brian Dyer, Director of Alumni Affairs, with words to thank them and excite them for the day to come. The representatives from each of the respective fraternities and sororities then departed to begin the work of tidying up campus.

The various tasks of the day ranged from the painting of curbs to the planting of flowers. Phi Gamma Delta, better known as Fiji, spent Saturday morning painting the visitor bleachers of the football stadium. While Fiji painted there, Delta Delta Delta worked on the curbs along the SRC. Mike Fuson, sophomore electrical engineer and member of Lambda Chi Alpha, noted that, “This is a great occasion for the Greek community to begin giving back to Rose,” a mood shared by all of the Greeks working on Saturday. At each of the work locations, the fraternities and sororities will be recognized with a sign signifying their work and allowing Greek alums to see what their fraternity or sorority has done to benefit Rose.

The entire event was capped off with a lunch hosted by Tom Miller, Associate Dean of Students, Carey Treager-Huber, Director of Student Activities, and Stefani Meyer, Graduate Student in Biomedical Engineering. On the whole, response to the day, Stefani Meyer said, “It seemed to be successful; seeing many needed projects be completed just to make campus look a little nicer.” The event was sponsored by Facilities and Student Affairs.
