1900: The Gold Standard Act is ratified, officially backing all United States currency with real gold. The Gold Standard eventually collapses in 1971, and now my dollar is worth roughly 0.53 Euros. Woot. Let’s go to Europe and pay 17 dollars for a beer. Awesome.

1942: Physicians John Bumstead and Orvan Hess became the first doctors in the world to successfully treat a patient, Anne Miller, using penicillin. Note that the “penicillin” growing on your three week-old pizza will not have the same anti-biotic effect. That’s mold.
