As an American you have the right to free speech and the civic duty to exercise it. This article is to teach you how to protest, because if you are going to teach how to exercise free speech, you might as well pick the most extreme example. And, for the sake of example, this article is about how to protest against the Church of Scientology.
Decide upon your goals. In the war against Scientology, the biggest weapon is information. Most Americans simply view the Church of Scientology (Co$) simply as a crazy religion for celebrities, instead of an evil, well funded cult that destroys both individuals and families. So, the goal is to spread information.
Figure out your message. While it is true that the higher-up Scientologist believes that the evil alien lord Xenu killed millions via earth volcanoes, this interesting tidbit does little to further the cause. Instead, talk about the mysterious deaths connected with Scientology. Get people interested in researching Operation Snow White, which was the single largest infiltration of the United States government to date, and was carried out by up to 5,000 Scientologists. Or Operation Freakout, in which the Co$ attempted to have a Paulette Cooper arrested or put in a mental institution for publishing a book critical of Scientology. You want to spread facts that people don’t already know (The Co$ is evil), there’s little point in spreading already common knowledge (the Co$ has strange beliefs).
Get others involved. A rally of one is the same as a rally of none. Either have a real life meeting, or set up a site like http://harbl.wetfish.net/cosplay/ which makes it easy for interested people to discuss the event.
Get the police on your side. It is often good form to inform the authorities of your protest. They may even help you by telling where public property is, what the local laws are concerning you protests, and such.
Get prepared. Create signs. Get flyers to hand out. Like giving a speech, tailor your message to your audience. See somebody wearing a cross? Give them a flyer explaining how L. Ron Hubbard said Jesus was a pedophile. See a person that can vote? Tell them about how the church doesn’t pay taxes. See a kid? Inform them of the absurd beliefs of the Co$. And so on.
Don’t be violent. The world likes non violent protestors. Ghandi. MLK.
Don’t get on camera. There is the potential for real danger here. Wear a large scarf. Sunglasses. A hat. Don’t walk directly to your car; if they know your license plate, they can find you. This is not the case for all protests; for other causes you will want people to see you, to realize you are a person just like them. Those causes don’t have millions of dollars in funding from Hollywood.
