Undoubtedly one of the best wrestlers to come through Rose-Hulman, Tyler Goble stands at 67-25 so far in his college career. With his impressive record, he stands in fifth place with the most career wins and third in school history with his winning percentage of 0.728. Of the 67 wins, 30 of them came in 2006, earning him the single season record for wins. He was also was Midstates Wrestling Conference Champion in 2007 and is a two-time HCAC Wrestler of the Week. Tyler recently took some time to answer some questions for the Thorn.
Rose Thorn: How long have you been wrestling?
Tyler Goble: I have been wrestling since I was 5 years old. So I guess that makes this my 15th year wrestling.
RT: What is your most memorable match?
TG: I would have to say my most memorable match occurred in high school my senior year, when I broke the record for the most career wins in Monroe County. It was something that I will remember forever, and is one of my many major accomplishments.
RT: You’re obviously a very good wrestler based on your record. Were you offered any opportunities to wrestle at a school with a bigger program when you were applying to colleges?
TG: When applying for schools, I only applied to Rose -Hulman, so I didn’t really even put my name out there to go to any other schools. I was mainly focused on academics, and the fact that Rose had a wrestling team was a major bonus.
RT: What’s the most meaningful award/recognition that you’ve received?
TG: The most meaningful award of my college career would have to be setting the single season record here at Rose-Hulman as a freshman.
RT: How has participating in a varsity sport had an effect on your experience at Rose?
TG: Being a varsity athlete at Rose has helped me keep my priorities in line. I have been able to stay focused during the wrestling season and continue to get all of my school work done, and maintain my grades. Also, I think there are many leadership and teamwork skills, which a varsity sport can prepare you for, that the class room cannot. Wrestling has been able to do that for me.
RT: Do you have any plans on staying involved in wrestling after Rose?
TG: After leaving Rose, I would still like to be involved in wrestling, but probably not as a competitor. I would like to begin coaching, most likely at the high school level.
