Athlete of the Week: Ron George

Tim Boyer

This week’s Athlete of the Week is senior mechanical engineering major from Louisville, Kentucky, Ron George. Ron is the captain of the men’s basketball team this year and is averaging 14.3 points per game. Last year, he was the third-leading scorer on the team with 8.1 points per game and posted the highest free-throw percentage with 87.8% of his attempts made. Ron shared some his thoughts in an interview with the Thorn:

Rose Thorn: How long have you been playing basketball?

Ron George: I’ve been playing since I was big enough to.

RT: Proudest accomplishment for during basketball here at Rose?

RG: Last season I made all HCAC Honorable Mention.

RT: How has playing a varsity sport had an effect on your experience at Rose?

RG: It keeps you incredibly busy. It’s a big time commitment, but it’s well worth it.

RT: How does it feel to playing in the 100th season of men’s basketball?

RG: It’s awesome. We are a big part of men’s basketball history and that’s a great honor.

RT: What makes this team different this year from last year?

RG: We aren’t as big of a team as we were in the past. We don’t have a dominant post player this year like we did in previous years.

RT: How do you expect the team to do this year?

RG: I expect us to get better as we mature. Not only the younger players, but as the more experienced players mature as well.

RT: What big challenges do you foresee for the team coming up this season?

RG: Our biggest challenge is staying consistent with the way we play.

RT: What’s it like being captain?

RG: It’s a big responsibility. The entire team looks up to you and you have to lead them.

RT: Plans for after graduation?

RG: Hopefully find work near Louisville, Kentucky.

RT: Do you plan to stay involved in the sport of basketball after graduation?

RG: Of course. I’ll still go to parks and gyms to play.
