A room with cheer

Guest Writer

So, I was walking down the ol’ BSB3 hall and was noting all the people inside when I stopped in awe of one particularly colorful room. All the doors in the hall had been wrapped like presents, but this one even had a tag on it, a fairly nice touch if I say so myself. The room was bedecked with snowflakes, icicle lights, tinsel, and even a Christmas tree! I couldn’t resist; I had to know how it was done. When I asked Emma Carrol, the girl inside, how she pulled the lighting scheme together, she told me, “many extension cords… and lots of tape.” It seemed amazing that that’s all she had to say, considering how cool her lights looked. The usually dull room lights had icicle lights taped all around them and technicolor snowflake ornaments hanging from the metal light grid, giving the illusion of falling snow in the middle of the room.

Another nice touch came from the windows, where she had sprayed canned snow around the frames and stuck gel snowflakes, Christmas trees, ornaments, and bells in varying colors on the glass. In truth, altering the lights did wonders for the room. In addition to the lights and window decorations, a Christmas tree stood on the bookshelf, colors brilliantly lighting up the room.

A silver garland draped around the branches and wove its way amid purple, green, and blue balls, sharing space with fifteen handmade candy cane ornaments (made by Maggie, Emma’s roommate). The multicolored lights on the tree lit up the room even more, but the tree topper was especially nifty; the handmade decoration looked like an explosion of color, various nickel-sized discs reaching out on silver wires to contend for air space.

Everything was so wacky that it worked perfectly; the room was warm and inviting, and fun to be in. I’ll definitely be dropping by again, even if only to feel as if I’ve just walked into a winter wonderland.
