“The Tick” turns back the clock

Philip Becker

“The Tick cartoon is on DVD!” When my friend told me this, the rest of the world melted away.

“Are you serious?!” was my only response. As much as he, and others, tried to convince me, such a thing had firmly been placed under the “fantasy” category in my mind.

My fantasy came true. “The Tick VS Season One” is now on DVD. It’s 12 episodes of the Tick. Nothing could ever be better.

Or could it?

I will never regret the purchase, as $3 an episode is a price I was gladly going to pay for nostalgia alone, which is where this DVD carried most of its weight. Three of the episodes made me laugh heartily and the rest just gave me a laugh, with the exception of one that barely got a chuckle.

The characters are all very interesting and they really get your imagination going. Dinosaur museum experts who turn into dinosaurs, snot monsters, genetically engineered clowns… The list goes on. These are a lot of fun.

However, many of the episodes do fall a little flat, and I think the nostalgia factor is what carried those episodes. And the DVD itself does nothing to compensate. The video quality is cheap and untouched, which left me asking myself, “How could I watch such cheap animation as a child? Did I have no taste? No class?” However, the biggest travesty of it all was there were no extras! Nothing. Sure you could watch in French, but there wasn’t any commentary, still frame galleries, or anything!

Although, the DVD did contain a slip of paper that said, “Be on the lookout for ‘The Tick VS Season Two’.” I will be. Just because there are many more amusing episodes I remember, and they weren’t on this disc. The most encouraging part was that the last two episodes were by far the most hilarious, which has me convinced the next season will be much funnier. And if all you “The Tick” fans get out there and buy this DVD, maybe we’ll get some extras next time!
