Sam and Max release date announced

Gregory Weir

Last week, Telltale Games announced that Sam & Max: Episode 1 will be released on GameTap on October 17. The first installment of the long-awaited episodic adventure game will be available for purchase on their website for non-GameTap-subscribers on November 1.

The titular characters, Sam and Max, are an anthropomorphic dog detective and a "hyperkinetic rabbity thing" created by Steve Purcell in 1987. They starred in a renowned LucasArts adventure game called Sam & Max Hit the Road which is remembered with humor and nostalgia by its players.

In 2002, a sequel to the original was announced: Sam & Max Freelance Police. Two years later, just before the expected ramp-up to release, the game was canceled. Fans everywhere cried themselves to sleep.

Telltale Games picked up the license in late 2005. The new title will be a traditional 2D point-and-click adventure game, and the first season will be released in six almost-monthly episodes on Turner Broadcasting System's Game-Tap service. GameTap is offered for a flat monthly fee of $9.95. Each episode will be released to the general public 15 days after its release on GameTap. Previous episodic Telltale Games have cost $12.99 per episode.
