Rose sports wrap-up
Track and FieldMen 2nd, Women 3rd at HCAC; Eight Individual Champions
Rose-Hulman finished second in men’s and third in women’s competition with a total of eight individual league champions at the HCAC championships on Saturday. Junior Janel Belton and senior Ryan Schipper led the Engineers by sweeping the two Field Athlete of the Meet awards. Belton won the discus throw and placed second in the shot put, while Schipper won the pole vault and added a fifth in the triple jump and a sixth in the long jump for Rose-Hulman. The Engineers performance featured a total of eight individuals combining for eight conference championships. On the women’s side, junior Katy Evert won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:09.84. Senior Kathleen Stynes matched her own school record with a 9’ 0 1/4” clearance in the pole vault and Belton added the discus title. On the men’s side, freshman Michael Burris and senior Thomas Reives had strong meets that featured one title each. Burris won the 110-high hurdles in a time of 15.54 seconds and Reives captured the triple jump with a leap of 42’ 11” in just his second competition of the year in the event. Other winners on the men’s side included junior Matt Repking with a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:39.11 and junior B.J. Esarey with a victory in the javelin throw with a toss of 170’ 11”.
Men’s Golf

HCAC TourneyThe men’s golf team strengthened its hold on fourth place in the HCAC Tournament on Saturday. Junior Ryan Mitchell leads the Engineers with an 18th place effort and a two-day score of 171. Mitchell fired a round of 84 on Friday and an 87 on Saturday.
Softball (13-21, 8-8 HCAC)
Rose-Hulman kept its hope of making the HCAC Tournament alive after a 6-3 victory and a 7-5 loss to the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.
Rose-Hulman needs Hanover to sweep Manchester on Wednesday and have Defiance sweep Bluffton in a make-up twinbill this week to qualify for the HCAC Tournament. Junior Katie Yiznitsky blasted a grand slam with two outs in the final inning to lift Rose-Hulman to its 13th victory of the season and the game one win. Freshman Jordan Goslee picked up the victory with a complete game effort.
Baseball (20-15, 11-7 HCAC)Rose-Hulman relied on a strong pitching performance from senior Brad Otto to earn a split against Transylvania on Saturday. In the opener, Otto led the effort with eight innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts. Senior Tim Braun led the Engineer offense with three hits and one RBI. Senior Matt Salisbury had two hits and scored twice to tie the all-time hits record at Rose-Hulman with 186.
