ΔΔΔ teeter-totters for Riley

Rachel Howser

The ladies of Rose’s Delta Delta Delta sorority held their annual Teeter-Totter-a-Thon from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30 until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31. Teeter-Totter-a-Thon is Tri-Delta’s major philanthropy event for the year. The ladies teeter-totter for 24 hours outside of Wal-Mart in order to raise money for the Riley Hospital for Children. Tri-Delta has made a substantial contribution to the hospital this year. Freshman biomedical engineering major and philanthropy chair of the sorority, Brittaney Mauer, explained, “Over the entire school year thus far, including Teeter-Totter-a-Thon, we have raised just under $10,000 for Riley’s.”

In addition to their usual effort, the ladies decided to not only teeter-totter at their usual location at the Wal-Mart on 3rd Street but also expanded their efforts to include the new Wal-Mart on Highway 46. Sorority president and junior biomedical engineering major Sarah Rice stated, “We decided to try something new this year with Teeter-Totter-a-Thon and collect money from two Wal-Marts. We collected money at the Wal-Mart on 3rd Street where we had the actual teeter-tottering as well as at the Wal-Mart on 46 close to campus. This was a big step because it meant that everyone in the chapter had to work more hours at the event and be even more committed than they were in years past.”

The ladies were pleased with the encouragement from Rose-Hulman. Rice continued, “We had a lot of support from the Rose community as well. When I was collecting money at the Wal-Mart close to Rose, a couple of people that I work with in the Admissions Office stopped by with their families. We also had a lot of students in other sororities and fraternities stop by the Wal-Mart out on 3rd Street and give the teeter-totters a try.”

Overall, the ladies worked hard, had a great time, and raised money for a great cause. Mauer stated, “It’s a great time for all the Tri Delta members, and we hear amazing stories from those who have been or known patients of Riley’s. We really appreciate all the donations...big or small...they all add up to a great amount.”
