Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Omicron Pi Women's Fraternity was founded January 2, 1897
at Barnard College, the first women's college affiliated with a
great men's university (Columbia College). In the stacks of
the Columbia Law Library, the four founders of AOII pledged each
other, creating a fraternity that now includes 188 collegiate and
320 alumnae chapters across the United States and Canada. The
International Headquarters of Alpha Omicron Pi are located in
Brentwood, Tennessee, outside of Nashville. AOII's National
Philanthropy is arthritis research, an endeavor to which each
chapter donates funds yearly.
Here at Rose-Hulman, the Delta Xi Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi
was colonized on April 10, 2006. The original members of this
chapter toiled for two years to bring a third women's fraternity to
Rose-Hulman. On May 19, 2007, the twenty-six members of the
charter class were initiated by the International President of
Alpha Omicron Pi. Many of the members of the Delta Xi chapter
are involved in other extracurricular activities on campus,
including athletics, music and theatre, and academic fraternities,
as well as numerous other organizations. Sisterhood events
include movie nights, semi-formal dinners, impromptu coffee runs
and several road-trips to visit other AOII chapters across the
mid-west. Even with their pressing academic and
extracurricular schedules, AOII also hosts the Mr. Rose Pageant, a
male beauty pageant held to raise funds for Strike Out Arthritis
for Arthritis Research. In 2009, the ladies were able to
donate $1600 from this event. In addition, the women hold two
other philanthropy events yearly, donating to Trick or Treat for
UNICEF and the Terre Haute Humane Society.
