LEXINGTON, KY. -- Transylvania
University placed three players in double figures to earn a 56-45
women's basketball victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
on Saturday.Jessica
Gilbert and Jackie Distler each scored 12 points for the Pioneers,
while Sara Sexton reached double figures with 10. The Pioneers
relied on 20 of 24 made free throws to help secure the victory.
Freshman Donna Marsh
(Mobile, Ala./ Baker) led Rose-Hulman's efforts with 15 points
and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
Marsh finished 5-8 from the field with three blocked shots in the
contest.
Junior Liz Ridgway
(Grosse Pointe, Mich./ Northwestern U.) came off the bench for
seven points, while senior Candace Procter (Southfield,
Mich./Groves) added six points and six rebounds.
Other key contributors for
the Engineers included senior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./
Olympia) with five points and three steals; sophomore Shayna
Banet (Canton, Ga./ Woodstock) with five points and four
rebounds; and senior Brittany Moline (Indianapolis/Perry
Meridian) with seven rebounds and three steals.
Transylvania led 27-18 at
halftime in part to 10-12 made free throws. In the second
half, Transylvania gained an 18-point lead at 50-32, before the
Engineers trimmed the final margin to 11 points. Rose-Hulman
held the victors to 31% from the field but were hampered by 27
turnovers.
Transylvania improved to
6-6 overall and 2-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in league
games. The Engineers host the College of Mount St. Joseph on
Wednesday at Hulbert Arena.
