TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Marian
College sophomore Megan Egenolf buried a three-pointer in the final
seconds of regulation to force overtime, and the host Knights
overcame a strong Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology effort to earn
a 62-60 overtime victory in women’s basketball action on Tuesday
night.
Rose-Hulman’s effort featured
a season-high four players in double figures. Senior Katie Tharp
(Linton) led the offense with a season-high 15 points. Junior
Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Northwestern U.) added 12
points, senior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia) scored
10 points and freshman Theresa Henke (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop
Brossart) also tallied 10 points.
Jessica
Carr led three Marian players in double figures with 18 points and
13 rebounds. Mandy Kot pitched in with 11 points on 6-6 from the
free throw line and Egenolf scored 10 for the winners.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first four minutes,
courtesy of two baskets by Procter. Marian answered with a 12-2 run
to claim a 15-8 lead midway through the opening half.
Four
straight points from Ridgway knotted the score at 15-15, before
Marian captured a 21-17 advantage. The Engineers held the Knights
without a basket in the final 6:23 of the first half, however, to
take a 26-23 halftime lead on three consecutive field goals by
Henke.
After a
tightly contested second half, Marian earned a 47-43 lead in the
final three minutes. A field goal by Tharp and a free throw by
Procter brought the Engineers within 47-46. Procter then swished a
pair of clutch free throws to give Rose-Hulman a 48-47 advantage
with 56 seconds left.
Carr
narrowly missed a layup on the next possession, with Tharp grabbing
a key rebound in traffic. Following a Marian foul, Floyd buried two
more free throws to give Rose-Hulman a 50-47 edge with 20 seconds.
Megan
Egenolf answered with a three-pointer on the following possession to
tie the score at 50-50 with seven seconds remaining and a 30-foot
shot by Floyd fell just short at the buzzer.
In the
overtime, a pair of layups by Ridgway gave Rose-Hulman a 54-52 lead
midway through the frame. Marian relied on an 8-2 run to take a
60-56 lead, before a layup by Tharp with nine seconds left brought
the Engineers within 60-58.
Mandy Kot
buried a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to give Marian
a 62-58 lead, and Tharp added a shot in the lane at the buzzer to
bring Rose-Hulman within the final margin.
Marian
improved to 9-2 with the victory, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 3-5
overall. The Engineers return to action at the Kalamazoo
Invitational on Dec. 29-30.
