TERRE HAUTE, IND. --
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from two sets behind to capture a
23-25, 21-25, 25-9, 25-16, 15-12 victory over Defiance College in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball opener for both schools.
Rose-Hulman's balanced and team
oriented attack featured four players with double figures in kills.
Freshman Anna Lewer
(Indianapolis/Lutheran) smashed a match high 14 kills to lead the offense.
Junior Amanda Jevons
(Henderson, Nev./Rancho) and sophomore Karah Hickman (Hobart) each
added 11 kills. Sophomore Morgan Williams (Fenton, Mich./Powers
Catholic) contributed 10 kills for the Engineers.
Sophomore Leah Pelzel
(Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) paced the passing performance with 47
assists and added 15 digs. Four players also reached double figures in
digs, led by junior Samantha Gregory (Huntsville, Ala./Catholic) with 20
digs.
Senior Kate Sernett (Crystal
Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) recorded 14 digs and joined Hickman with
a team-high two solo blocks, while Lewer also contributed 13 digs to the effort.
Pelzel and Hickman also tallied three service aces each.
Rose-Hulman improved to 11-5 on
the season and travels to Franklin College for another HCAC matchup on Thursday
night.
