  Rose-Hulman News Rose-Hulman Volleyball Picks Up Two Victories at Earlham

RICHMOND, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology stands 4-2 on the season after defeating Cumberland and Earlham on Saturday at the Quaker Invitational.

The Fightin' Engineers claimed a 26-24, 19-25, 25-14, 25-19 win over Cumberland and defeated Earlham 25-13, 25-13, 25-15.  Rose-Hulman opened the weekend with losses to NAIA foes Marian and Goshen on Friday.

Sophomore Karah Hickman (Hobart) led the Engineer individual effort by earning a spot on the weekend's all-tournament team.

Hickman smashed a career-high 17 kills with one error against Cumberland and added 16 kills on just two errors vs. Earlham.  For the weekend, Hickman smashed 45 kills with only six attack errors.

Freshman Anna Lewer (Indianapolis/ Lutheran) and junior Amanda Jevons (Henderson, Nev./Rancho) joined Hickman with double figure kills against Cumberland with 13 and 11, respectively.  Sophomore Leah Pelzel (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) contributed a season-high 47 assists against Cumberland and led the squad with 31 vs. Earlham.

Defensively, three Engineers reached double figures in digs in the Cumberland victory.  Lewer led the team with 18 digs, junior Samantha Gregory (Huntsville, Ala./Catholic) added 15 and Pelzel contributed 14. 

The defense also featured four blocks by Hickman and three each by Jevons, Lewer and sophomore Morgan Williams (Fenton, Mich./Powers Catholic) in the Cumberland match.  Hickman again recorded three blocks, with Williams and Lewer adding three each vs. Earlham.

The Friday match with Marian featured Hickman recording a match-high seven kills and senior Kate Sernett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) leading the squad with 10 digs.  Sernett duplicated the effort against Goshen, with Lewer and Jevons adding seven kills each.  Pelzel had 25 assists in the Goshen match.

Rose-Hulman now stands 4-2 on the season and is back in action at home Friday, September 11 at 6 and 8 p.m. with matches against Aurora and Lincoln Christian.
