  Rose-Hulman News Rose-Hulman Volleyball Sweeps Knox, Eureka to Open Season

EUREKA, ILL. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology volleyball team earned three-set victories over Knox College and Eureka College to open the 2009 campaign on Tuesday.

The Fightin' Engineers topped Knox 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 in the opener, before capturing a 25-14, 25-10, 25-18 win over the Red Devils in the nightcap.

Junior Amanda Jevons (Henderson, Nev./Rancho) paced Rose-Hulman offensively with 12 kills against Eureka and nine vs. Knox.  Jevons made just one error on the day and recorded a .571 hitting percentage in the two matches.

Sophomore Karah Hickman (Hobart) pitched in with nine kills against Knox with a .533 hitting percentage.  Freshman Anna Lewer (Indianapolis/ Lutheran) added seven kills against Eureka and six vs. Knox with just one error in each match.

Sophomore Leah Pelzel (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) provided steady passes with 33 assists vs. Eureka and 25 against Knox.  She joined Jevons with three service aces each against Knox, and freshman Erika McGuire (Indianapolis/Warren Central) contributed five aces in the Eureka win.

Defensively, senior Kate Sernett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) tallied 11 digs and junior Samantha Gregory (Huntsville, Ala./Catholic) contributed 10 against Eureka.  Lewer led the defensive effort with 10 digs against Knox.  Pelzel, Hickman and sophomore Morgan Williams (Fenton, Mich./Powers Catholic) had two blocks each against Knox.

Rose-Hulman stands 2-0 on the season and returns to action with two matches on Friday and another pair on Saturday at the Eureka College Invitational.
