Steven Vande Lune broke the Rose-Hulman 1000-yard freestyle school record with a time of 10:13.27

EVANSVILLE, IND. --  The Engineer men's and women's swimming teams earned victories over Vincennes University and fell to the University of Evansville in a tri-meet on Saturday.

The Rose-Hulman men defeated Vincennes by a margin of 75-35 and was defeated by Evansville 79-34.  The women's squad tallied a 72-19 win over the Trailblazers and suffered a 91-14 loss to the Purple Aces.

The men were led by junior Steven Vande Lune (Kokomo) who smashed a the Rose-Hulman school record on his way to winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:13.27, 12 seconds faster that the previous mark set by Craig Kedrowski in 2003.  Vande Lune also earned a third place finish for the Engineers in the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:10.18.

Rose-Hulman received another first place finish as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of seniors Jacob Sorensen (Enterprise, Ala./Daleville) and Adam Effinger (Plainfield), junior Nick Lee (Bryan, Texas), and sophomore Brian Yount (Bloomington, Ill.) won in a time of 1:30.83.

Sorensen collected a pair of second place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:38.88) and 200-yard individual medley (2:05.91) in addition to the relay victory.

Effinger finished the afternoon with a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.21, while capturing third place in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.06. Lee and Yount contributed to the team effort as well, with Lee taking second and Yount third in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.56 and 52.22, respectively.

Freshman Michael Gerdov (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai Stevenson) earned a pair of third place honors in the 1-meter (213.95) and 3-meter (193.55) diving events.

On the women's side, freshman Katie Trella (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine Township) led the Engineers with a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.78 and placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 11:25.20 mark.

Other top performers for the Rose-Hulman were senior Anita Isch (Buffalo, Minn.) who placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.93) and sophomore Deb Aleksa (Glendale, Ariz./Dear Valley) who tallied a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:52.74).

Freshmen Rachelle Cobb (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River), Caitlin Kohli (Lima, Ohio/Bath), and Heather Wiest (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) each earned third place honors in their respective events for the Engineers with Cobb in the 100-yard butterfly (1:18.08), Kohli in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.93), and Wiest in the 50-yard freestyle (28.09).

The Rose-Hulman men's and women's swimming teams will return to the pool on January 30, when they travel to DePauw University to take on the rival Tigers at 6 p.m.
