  Rose-Hulman News Eight Wins, 11 Second-Place Finishes Pace R-H at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on eight first-place finishes and 11 runner-up marks to claim second-place honors at the University of Evansville Invitational on Saturday.

Junior Jacob Sorensen (Enterprise, Ala.) led the individual effort with two individual and one relay title.  Sorensen won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:01.71 and added the 400-individual medley title in 4:45.34.

Sorensen combined with sophomore Nick Lee (Bryan, Texas), sophomore Steven Vande Lune (Kokomo) and junior Adam Effinger (Plainfield) to win the men's 200-freestyle relay in an impressive time of 1:29.43.

Other individual winners for the Engineers include Lee with a time of 21.83 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle; sophomore Katy Zawadski (Yorktown) with 156.25 points in one-meter diving; freshman Brian Yount (Bloomington, Ill.) with a time of 5:14.17 in the 500-freestyle; freshman Jessica Neeb (Fountaintown/New Palestine) with a 1:17.77 in the women's 100-butterfly; and Effinger with a 53.13 effort in the 100-butterfly.

Freshman Deborah Aleksa (Glendale, Ariz./Dear Valley) led the second-place efforts with two runner-up finishes.  Aleksa placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.63 and in the 400-individual medley in 5:02.52.

Other runner-up efforts included Vande Lune in the 200-freestyle in 1:48.83;  senior Elaine Kratz (Telford, Pa.) in the 50-freestyle in a time of 26.96; freshman Sam Danesis (Akron, Ohio/Revere) in one-meter diving with 129.57 points; freshman Mark Parzych (Pearland, Texas/Central) with 190.10 points in one-meter diving; junior Zach Tatlock (Shelbyville) in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:45.99; and freshman Sarah Nejfelt (Gosport/Edgewood) in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:31.62.

Relay teams earning second-place honors included the women's 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Stephanie Hance (Noblesville), Aleksa, Kratz and senior Heidi Rorick (Monroeville/Dwenger) in 2:03.04; the men's 200-medley relay team of Lee, freshman Clayton Shotwell (Arcadia/Hamilton Heights), Effinger and Sorensen in 1:42.59; and the women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Katrz, Rorick, Neeb and Aleksa in 1:54.84.

Rose-Hulman takes the two next weekends off in preparation for the Bluegrass Mountain Conference championships at Charlotte, N.C., on Feb. 15-17.
