TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology opened the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball
Tournament with a 1-0 extra inning victory in a pitching duel against the
College of Mount St. Joseph on Friday.
Katie Maggard tossed the
complete game shutout in the circle for Rose-Hulman, allowing just four hits
with three walks and four strikeouts. Maggard improved to 9-3 on the
season with her second shutout against Mount St. Joseph in 10 days.
Casey Brookbank was just
as sharp for Mount St. Joseph, holding the Engineers scoreless for seven
innings. Brookbank scattered nine hits and three walks, before allowing a
double to eighth inning leadoff hitter Jordan Goslee.
Katie Cohill entered the
game in relief for Mount St. Joseph and allowed a sacrifice bunt to Katie Frey
to place Goslee on third. Kristin Greer ended the game with a single to
left center field to score Goslee.
Offensively, Brittany
Bernthold led the Engineer offense with four singles. Greer added three
singles, including the game-winning hit. Casey Downey paced the Mount St.
Joseph offense with a pair of doubles.
Rose-Hulman advances to
game four of the tournament and improved to 25-10 on the season with the
victory. Mount St. Joseph dropped to 15-22 on the season and returns in
action during game three of the tournament.
