Rose-Hulman Tops Defiance, Hanover to Move Into 2nd in HCAC

David Becerra earned a three-set victory at No. 4 singles to secure the team victory vs. Defiance.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology improved to 4-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis action with victories of 5-4 over Defiance and 5-0 over Hanover on Saturday.

The top doubles tandem of junior Scott Grubbs (Wildwood, Mo.) and Michael Schoumacher (Memphis, Tenn.) led the team effort with a 2-0 mark. Grubbs and Schoumacher added singles victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots against Defiance.

Sophomore Brent Frizzell (Avon) pitched in with a perfect 2-0 record at the No. 6 singles position.

The final match against Defiance featured a 4-4 tie until the No. 4 singles match. Junior David Becerra (Brownsburg) battled from a one-set deficit to claim a 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory to win the match for Rose-Hulman.

Rose-Hulman improved to 6-7 overall and 4-1 in HCAC action with the two victories. The Engineers are now tied for second in the conference standings with Defiance. Rose-Hulman will travel to Marian College on Sunday.
