INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- The
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's tennis team opened the
season with a 1-1 record in a pair of matches at the West Indy
Racquet Club on Saturday and Sunday.
The Fightin' Engineers swept Earlham
College by a 9-0 score on Sunday, after falling to NAIA nationally ranked St.
Francis University by a 9-0 count on Saturday.
Juniors Scott Grubbs (Wildwood, Mo.)
and Michael Schoumacher (Memphis, Tenn.) led the Engineers with wins as
the top doubles team and in the top two singles spots vs. Earlham.
The tandem of sophomores Alex Gumz
(Palatine, Ill.) and Seth Hendrickson (Crawfordsville) won at the No.
3 and No. 4 singles slots after teaming up for a win in No. 2 doubles against
the Quakers.
Sophomore Dallas Burton (Haughton,
La.) claimed victories at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with sophomore
David Pick (Chicago, Ill.) against Earlham. Sophomore Brent
Frizzell (Avon) contributed a win at the No. 6 singles slot.
Rose-Hulman will return to
action on Sunday with a matchup against Earlham College.
