LEXINGTON, KY. --
Transylvania University placed four players in double
figures and shot 46% from the field to top Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology 66-50 in first round action in the
Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball
Tournament on Tuesday.
Matthew Parton and Aaron Cash scored 15 points each for the
Pioneers. Stephen Gabbard added 14 points and Joey Verax
contributed 11 as part of an offense that buried nine
three-point shots in the win.
Sophomore Jeff McCartney (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) paced
the Rose-Hulman offense with a career-high 14 points.
McCartney buried four three-pointers and also pitched in a
career-high three steals.
Junior Lorenzo Rice (Grandview, Mo.) came off the
bench for nine points and three rebounds for the Engineers.
Other key contributors for Rose-Hulman included senior
Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) with eight
points and five rebounds, and senior Ron George
(Louisville, Ky./Manual) with seven points.
The game was also the final college contest for seniors
Phil Sundling (Huntington/North), who had five rebounds
and two assists, and Ross Uthoff (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) who scored four points.
Transylvania jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead and
pushed the lead to 20 points early in the second half.
Rose-Hulman charged within 11 points on two occasions but
was unable to trim the margin to single digits.
Transylvania improved to 16-10 on the season and advances to
the HCAC Tournament semifinals against Franklin College on
Friday. The Engineers capped the season with a 12-14 record
and a sixth-place finish in the HCAC.
