DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The
Rose-Hulman Engineers stunned the HCAC regular season
champion Defiance College Yellow Jackets on a late field
goal that gave the Engineers a 43-42 victory.
Rose-Hulman relied on a complete team effort
to earn the win on Saturday, but it was senior Phil
Sundling (Huntington/North) who gave the Engineers the
victory by driving the lane and banking in a six-foot jump
shot with just three seconds to play.
Defiance's Anthony Jackson put up a
desperation shot that fell just short of the basket and gave
Rose-Hulman the upset win and earned them a trip to the HCAC
Tournament.
Defense was the key to the Engineer
victory as Rose-Hulman held Defiance's potent offense to
just 19 second half points on just seven field goals.
Senior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Dupont
Manual) led the Engineer offense with a team-high 10
points on a 4-7 shooting effort.
Freshman Daniel Lowers (Gosport/Edgewood)
pitched in with nine points, while seniors Jared Moore
(Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) and Sundling added seven
points each.
It was Sundling and Moore that let the
Rose-Hulman rebounding effort with six a piece, while Lowers
held HCAC scoring leader C.J. Johnson to just two points on
seven shot attempts.
In the first half, Rose-Hulman shot 42%
from the field, with the most important basket being a Moore
jumper at the buzzer that pulled the Engineers within one at
23-22 at the half.
A jumper by George gave Rose-Hulman an
early second half advantage, as a pair of free throws by
freshman Michael Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) gave the
Engineers a five point advantage with 12:56 remaining.
Defiance junior Anthony Pettaway tied the
score at 32 with 10:30 to play, before Rose-Hulman rattled
off five straight points and took at 37-32 on a Lorenzo
Rice (Grandview, Mo.) free throw with 4:32 to go.
The Engineers held a 41-35 advantage
before the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-0 run over the next
two minutes and took a 42-41 lead with just 11 seconds
remaining on a layup by Anthony Jackson.
Rose-Hulman took a timeout and then
pushed the ball up the floor as Sundling provided the late
heroics that led to the Engineer victory.
The win improves Rose-Hulman to 12-13 on
the season and a final mark of 8-8 in HCAC regular season
play. The Engineers will travel to Transylvania
University as the six seed in the HCAC Tournament and take
on the Pioneers at 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening.
