TERRE HAUTE, IND. –
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Ron George
(Louisville, Ky./ Manual) scored a career-high 31 points and
forced overtime with a three-pointer in the final second to lead
the Engineers to a 77-71 win over Franklin on Wednesday night.
George battled around a screen and fired a well
defended three-pointer into the basket with 1.0 seconds left in
regulation to tie the score at 59-59. Franklin's
half-court three-pointer by Jace Redman at the buzzer was just
short to force the extra session.
In overtime, George scored Rose-Hulman's first
five points and scored 10 of the team's 18 points to help the
Engineers secure their ninth victory.
George finished 10-13 from the field and 10-15
from the free throw line with six rebounds and four assists in
the career-high performance.
Other Engineers reaching double figures included
freshman Michael Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) with 10 points
and eight rebounds; and senior Phil Sundling
(Huntington/North) with 10 points and three boards.
Other key contributors to the Rose-Hulman effort
included freshman Daniel Lowers (Gosport/Edgewood) with
eight point sand five rebounds; senior Jared Moore
(Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) with six points and six
rebounds; and senior Ross Uthoff (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) with six points and a solid 20 minutes off the
bench.
The balanced Franklin offense featured four
players in double figures. Marty Young and Jeff Gasser
paced the Grizzlies with 18 points each, while Jace Redman added
12 points and Jon Neill scored 10.
Franklin held a seven-point lead with 3:37
remaining after a score by Young, but Rose-Hulman's defense
tightened to help the Engineers close the deficit. Kelly
scored a conventional three-point play, Lowers scored on a layup
and free throws by George and Kelly knotted the score at 55-55
in the final minute.
Rose-Hulman shot 65% from the field in the
contest, including a perfect 3-3 in overtime and 62.5% in each
half. The Engineers also hit 12 of 15 free throws in the
extra session and outrebounded the visitors by a 36-25 count.
Rose-Hulman improved to 9-10 overall and 5-5 in
conference play, while Franklin fell to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in
the league. The Engineers travel to Transylvania
University on Saturday.
