TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology head coach Jim Shaw earned his 200th career victory
in a dramatic 73-71 win over Hanover College in Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action on
Saturday.Rose-Hulman inbounded from
underneath its own basket with 10.3 seconds left and three
seconds remaining on the shot clock in a 71-71 game. The
entry pass was deflected to freshman Daniel Lowers (Gosport/
Edgewood), who quickly launched a shot that was short.
Senior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) leaped
into the air, snagged the rebound, and scored on a reverse layup
with 6.7 seconds left.
Hanover had one final shot, with Clint Parker
attempting to score on a three-pointer with time running out.
Moore snatched a steal from Parker, however, to secure the
Engineer victory.
"Hanover made all the shots early, and I'm so
proud that we hung in there. We were very poised down the
stretch, defended well and kept them off the boards. The
last basket was an unbelievably great play by Jared. We
had a great overall effort today," said Shaw.
Rose-Hulman shot 67.4% from the field in the
game, their best shooting performance since a 1998 matchup with
Hanover College. Senior Ron George (Louisville,
Ky./Manual) paced the effort with 19 points on a perfect 8-8
from the field.
Other Engineers reaching double figures
included freshman Michael Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) with
15 points on 7-9 from the field, and Lowers with 10 points, five
rebounds and four steals.
Robby Brown led three Hanover players in
double figures with 17 points. Brock Dawson pitched in
with 13 points and Clint Parker scored 11 for the Panthers.
Hanover jumped out to a 14-point first-half
lead at 28-14, before Rose-Hulman charged to within 39-36 at the
half. Three-pointers by sophomore Jeff McCartney
(Wooster, Ohio/Triway) and junior Lorenzo Rice
(Grandview, Mo.) keyed the first-half rally.
In the second half, Hanover again earned a
steady lead at 57-49 with 8:25 remaining. Rose-Hulman
methodically charged back to tie the score for the first time at
66-66 on two free throws by senior Phil Sundling
(Huntington/North) with 3:30 left.
The Engineers gained their first lead of the
day at 71-69 on a layup by George with 1:20 left. Two free
throws by Brown knotted the score at 71-71 with 1:06 left and
set the stage for the final possession.
Shaw stands at 200-153 in his 14th year at
Rose-Hulman, and the Engineers improved to 7-9 on the campaign
with the victory.
"This was such a good, big win for us. I
think we needed to make up one or two of our early home losses
to make the conference tournament, and we did that today," said
Shaw.
Rose-Hulman improved to 3-4 in Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Hanover dropped to
8-8 on the campaign. The Engineers return to action on
Wednesday at Anderson University.
