TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology placed four players in double figures to earn a 70-66
overtime victory over Robert Morris-Springfield on Tuesday night
at Hulbert Arena.Freshman Daniel
Lowers (Gosport/ Edgewood) scored a career-high 22 points to
lead the Rose-Hulman offense. Lowers finished 10-15 from
the field in the win.
Senior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/ Perry
Meridian) added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Senior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./ Manual) pitched in
with 13 points and five steals, while freshman Michael Kelly
(Fort Myers, Fla.) added 12 points.
The balanced offensive effort helped offset a
game-high performance of 29 points and 15 rebounds by Corley Lee
of Robert Morris-Springfield.
The Engineers shot 53% from the field,
including 55% during the final 20 minutes of regulation, to earn
their sixth win of the campaign.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to an 11-point lead
late in the first half, before Robert Morris scored 10 of the
final 12 points of the stanza to close within 33-30 at the
break. In the second half, the Engineers held on to a
seven-point lead at 50-43 with 11:29 left.
Robert Morris answered with an 8-2 run to move
within 52-51, before two straight layups by Lowers pushed the
Engineer lead to 58-53. The Eagles rallied again to tie
the score at 59-59.
George scored in the paint with 39 seconds
left to give Rose-Hulman a 61-59 edge, before Tyler Morretto
buried two free throws for Robert Morris to tie the game at
61-61. Tim Hahn later missed a Robert Morris jumper in the
final seconds that Engineer senior Phil Sundling
(Huntington/North) rebounded and nearly heaved into the
basket at the buzzer from 70-feet at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, both teams exchanged
baskets to force ties at 63-63 and 65-65. Kelly then
scored in the paint to give Rose-Hulman a 67-65 lead and,
following a pair of defensive stops, George buried one free
throw to make the score 68-65 with 36 seconds left.
Morretto was fouled heading into the basket
and made one of two free throws to bring the Eagles within 68-66
at the 18-second mark. George swished two free throws in
the final seconds to secure the final margin of victory.
Rose-Hulman improved to 6-9 on the season, and
Robert Morris-Springfield dropped to 10-11 overall. The
Engineers travel to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe
Hanover College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
