PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology men's basketball team placed three players in double
figures to earn a 68-56 victory over Montclair State University
in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Senior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Manual)
led the Engineers with 19 points on 8-12 from the field.
Freshman Daniel Lowers (Ellettsville/Edgewood) added 15
points and four rebounds, while senior Ross Uthoff (Crete,
Ill./Illinois Lutheran) also reached double figures with 10.
The Engineers shot 53% from the field in the game
and 56% in the second half to turn a six-point halftime lead
into the 12-point victory. Other
key contributors included senior Jared Moore
(Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) with eight points and four
assists; junior Lorenzo Rice (Grandview, Mo.) with five
points and three rebounds; sophomore Jeff McCartney (Wooster,
Ohio/Triway) with five points off the bench; and junior
Phil Sundling (Huntington/ North) with four points, four
rebounds and four steals.
Rose-Hulman's team defensive effort held
Montclair State to just 33% from the field in the first half to
earn a 33-26 lead at the break. Uthoff provided an offensive
spark with a perfect 3-3 with eight points in the opening 20
minutes.The Engineers turned a 36-33
lead early in the second half into a 53-39 advantage on a
three-pointer by George at the 10:07 mark. Montclair State
was unable to close the deficit within nine points the rest of
the way.
With the victory, Rose-Hulman advances to play
host Manhattanville, a 69-60 winner over John Jay, in Saturday's
8 p.m. championship game of the 31st Castle Classic.
