Hot Shooting Leads Rose-Hulman Past Blackburn
CARLINVILLE, ILL. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology shot 63% from the field in the first half and hit their first eight shots of the second half to earn an 74-57 victory over Blackburn College in men's college basketball on Saturday.
Senior Brian Bibb (Hoopeston, Ill.) led a balanced attack with his second consecutive double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) also reached double figures with a season-high 15 points.
Freshman Jeff McCartney (Wooster, Ohio/Triway)
contributed to the balanced attack with career-highs of nine points
and four assists. Junior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Manual)
added nine points and sophomore Lorenzo Rice (Grandview, Mo.)
pitched in with eight. The Engineers shot an even 60% from the field for their best shooting performance since a victory over Rhodes in December of 2001.
The defense was also a key, as Rose-Hulman held Blackburn to 32% from the field and 15% on 3-20 from three-point range. Rose-Hulman hit 15-24 field goal attempts in the first half to take a 33-21 lead into the break. The Engineers opened with a 4-3 edge and scored six straight points to make the margin 10-3, with Moore sparking the run with back-to-back layups. The lead grew to 14-4 on a jumper by Bibb at the 13:49 mark of the half. Rose-Hulman pushed the edge to a half high 13 points at 21-8 on a three-pointer by sophomore Lorenzo Rice (Grandview, Mo.) at the 9:54 mark. Blackburn closed within 21-14 a 16-foot jumper by Leotis Howard with 6:53 left. Rose-Hulman relied on a 10-4 run to regain a 13-point lead at 31-18 on a trey by junior Ron George (Louisville, Ky./Manual) at the 1:10 mark. A three-pointer by Bibb and a layup by Moore increased the Engineer lead to 15 points at 40-25 early in the second half. Rose-Hulman eventually buried eight consecutive shots to open the half, building a 51-31 lead that helped the Engineers secure the win. Rose-Hulman improved to 2-1 on the season and opens its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule at Anderson University on Wednesday evening. Blackburn dropped to 2-2 on the campaign. |
