Aurora Narrowly Tops Rose-Hulman 66-61 to Win Wabash Men's Basketball Invitational

Box Score

Brian Bibb had 19 points and 11 rebounds to make the all-tournament team.

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. -- Aurora University overcame a pair of career-high scoring efforts by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology frontcourt players to earn a 66-61 victory over the Engineers in the championship game of the Wabash College Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Brian Bibb (Hoopeston, Ill.) earned a spot on the all-tournament team with 19 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Senior David Yaraschefski (Mooresville) tied a career-high with 16 points on 8-11 from the field to join Bibb on the all-tournament squad.

Senior Jason Bednarko (Athens, Ill.) also reached double figures with 12 points for the Engineers.

Preseason All-American Larry Welton led Aurora with 23 points to earn Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.  Chad Trudo joined Welton on the all-tourney team with an 11-point effort.

"It was a hard fought game and we lost to a good team.  We had our chances late and got some tough breaks, but we battled and had a good inside game.  There were some positives, but there are some things we can do better," said Rose-Hulman head coach Jim Shaw.

David Yaraschefski also made the all-tournament team with 16 points for the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 13-4 lead with 14:52 left in the opening half.  Yaraschefski had six early points, before a jumper by junior Jared Moore (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) gave the Engineers the nine-point lead.

Aurora quickly rallied to take a 20-15 lead on a 16-2 run that ended with 8:12 remaining.  The Spartans earned an 11-point lead late in the first half, before taking a nine-point edge into the locker room.

In the second half, Rose-Hulman trimmed the margin to four points on a three-pointer by Bednarko at the 13:56 mark.  Aurora again gained an 11-point edge at 47-36 on a trey by Welton with 12:12 left.

The lead grew to 13 points at 54-41 on a Trudo three-pointer with 9:11 left.  Rose-Hulman answered with a strong charge to close within 62-58 at the 3:42 mark.  Bibb and Bednarko capped the rally with a pair of threes.

The Engineers closed within three points at 64-61 on a three-pointer by Moore with 32 seconds left.  Dusty Magee hit a pair of free throws for the Spartans to secure the final margin of victory.

Rose-Hulman dropped to 1-1 on the season and returns to action at Blackburn College on Saturday at 4 p.m. Indiana time (3 p.m. local).
