KANAZAWA, JAPAN -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
men's basketball team enjoyed a successful journey to China and Japan
for the fourth foreign trip under head coach
Jim Shaw.
Rose-Hulman began the week with three days in Beijing,
China,
before spending Wednesday in Shanghai.
On the basketball floor, the Engineers dropped a narrow
72-67 to Tsinghua University of Beijing. Ron George scored a
game-high 20 points for Rose-Hulman, while Brian Bibb pitched in with
14.

Off the floor, the Engineers visited five of China's most
famous tourist attractions. The team visited the Imperial Palace,
Summer Garden, Great Wall, TianAnMen Square and the Hutong area.
Dave Sutherland, a member of the Rose-Hulman Athletic
Hall of Fame, currently resides in Asia and united with the team in
Shanghai. Shaw credits Sutherland with originally suggesting the
idea of Rose-Hulman making a trip to China.
The Japan portion of the trip
included a victory on the basketball floor over Rose-Hulman's sister school, Kanazawa Institute of Technology. The
Kanazawa squad is coached by Takashi Aoki, who spent 1998-99 as a
visiting assistant at Rose-Hulman.
Off the floor, the Engineers visited
Kyoto and Kanazawa. Stops on the tour included the Golden Palace,
Kiyomizu Temple and the Japanese Gardens.
Rose-Hulman professor Dr. Scott
Clark, on a sabbatical in Japan, accompanied the team throughout much of
the journey.
"This was another valuable and rewarding
experience for all the players and travel party who made the trip abroad with the team. We
brought back memories that will last a lifetime," said Rose-Hulman head coach Jim Shaw.
