Six Teams Selected for 2008 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Terre Haute will serve as hosts for the 2008 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will host a six-team NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional at Art Nehf Field beginning Wednesday.

The six teams include the host Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers, one of 14 at-large selections by the NCAA Division III Tournament Committee.

Heidelberg College is the top seed in the Mideast Regional.  The Student Princes compiled a 37-8 record this season and defeated perennial power Marietta College twice on Saturday to earn its second trip to the NCAA Tournament as the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament champion.

The College of Wooster earned the No. 2 seed for the Mideast Regional.  An at-large selection by the NCAA Tournament Committee, the Fighting Scots finished 34-9 and won the North Coast Athletic Conference Eastern Division title during the campaign.

Calvin College will make its fourth appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament as the automatic qualifier from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.  The Knights have won a school record 32 games under first year head coach John Sparks and claimed the league's regular season league title to earn their NCAA bid.

Rose-Hulman has earned the No. 4 seed as an at-large selection from the Tournament committee.  The Engineers are making their third appearance in NCAA postseason play and their first since 1996.  Jeff Jenkins, who began his coaching career at tournament selection Heidelberg in 1987 and 1988, crossed the 500-win plateau in his career earlier this season for a squad that finished 31-13 for the second winningest season in school history.

Adrian College claimed the No. 5 seed as the third at-large selection in the Mideast Regional.  The Bulldogs finished with a 30-10 record against a schedule that featured 10 games against nationally ranked opponents.  Adrian finished one game behind Calvin in the MIAA regular season standings and will make their third appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and all three appearances have come at Mideast Regionals hosted by Rose-Hulman.

Transylvania University captured the No. 6 seed after winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship to earn their first trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs.  The Pioneers finished 31-12 and defeated Rose-Hulman in the second of two HCAC Tournament title games to earn the automatic qualification.

Play will begin on Wednesday and continue through Saturday at Art Nehf Field.  Matchups, starting times and complete tournament information will be available online at www.rose-hulman.edu/sports/baseball/08regional.
