  Rose-Hulman News Rose-Hulman Academic All-American Tradition

One of Rose-Hulman's proudest athletic traditions combines the hard physical work it takes to excel on the field and the rigorous mental work it takes to succeed in the classroom.

Seventy-six times since 1978, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology student-athletes have been named to Academic All-America teams -- and many more to all-district, all-region and all-conference academic teams.

Fifty-five different athletes have had a hand in collecting the 76 individual awards. At least one student-athlete has earned an Academic All-America honor at Rose-Hulman for 23 consecutive years, the sixth longest current streak in the nation.

Baseball player Kevin Kluemper won the nation's top honor when he was named the Verizon Academic All-American of the Year in 1991. Track and field standout Ryan Loftus repeated that elite feat in 1998 by winning a national indoor pole vault championship and graduating with a 3.82 GPA in chemical engineering.

In 2008, Thomas Reives became the second student-athlete in school history to earn Academic All-American honors in multiple sports.  He captured first-team honors in track in 2008, second-team accolades in track in 2007 and second-team recognition in football in 2007 while maintaining a 3.98 GPA in the classroom.

Seventy-one of the 76 Academic All-American honors were handed out by the College Sports Information Directors of America -- the most coveted and competitive Academic All-American award.

Sixteen Engineers have earned Academic All-American recognition in two or more seasons.  Football's Greg Kremer and Ed Huonder joined Reives in receiving the honor three times. Huonder won the award twice as a football player and once as a baseball player. Four Rose-Hulman football players earned Academic All-American honors in 1988, the first time in Verizon program history that one school placed four teammates on an Academic All-American team.

The requirements for each of the Academic All-American award varies, but requirements for the ESPN The Magazine award are: 1) Student-athlete must be enrolled in at least his/her second year of school at his/her current institution; 2) Student-athlete must have a minimum of a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale; and 3) Student-athlete must be a contributing member of his/her athletic team, participating in a minimum of 50% of the team's games or meets. Qualified applicants are then voted on by sports information directors across the nation to form the all-academic team.

Rose-Hulman sports information director Kevin Lanke currently serves as the College Division Representative for football and the men's at-large contests in the school’s Academic All-America district.
