OVERVIEW
This course teaches engineers the basics
of forensic engineering practice and is
targeted to those who are considering or
have recently entered into the field of
expert witness work as engineers. There
are five topics covered in the course:
Qualifications and Becoming an Expert,
Legal Issues and Working with the Legal
Professionals, Engineering Ethics for
Forensic Engineers, Planning Forensic
Engineering Investigations and a
Systematic Methodology for Investigating
Failures.
The course materials and methodology
apply to engineers of any discipline.
Case studies are used throughout the
course to illustrate the principles
learned in these five topics. Planned
case studies typically include study of
civil engineering system failures,
construction failures, building envelope
failures, terrorist attacks, and
contaminant releases. The course
includes some work outside of scheduled
class time, with each participant
investigating and reporting to the group
on an independent study of an existing
failure or dispute of each participant’s
choosing.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, participants
will be able to
- Identify their role as an expert, plan
how to broaden their expertise and value
to clients, and use this knowledge to
market their services to clients
- Use a systematic process to identify
experts to support their forensic
practice
- Be a more effective expert as a part
of the legal team on cases
- Set priorities about equipment and
resources necessary for successful
forensic practice
- Prepare better engineering reports on
their findings as experts
- Investigate engineering failures using
a highly effective, systematic
methodology
OUTCOMES
Participants will be able to use tools
for development, planning, and reporting
expert work. Participants will be a more
effective member of the legal team.
Participants will be able to confidently
apply a highly effective, systematic
methodology for investigating failures.
The course will provide a broader
understanding of the role of external or
internal consultants as experts in
understanding failures of engineered
systems or in assisting to resolve
disputes related to engineering
practice.
