Professor Azad Siahmakoun is among 59 new Fellows of the Society for SPIE, the
international optics and photonics society that advances light-based
technologies.
Fellows are SPIE members of distinction who have made significant
scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of
optics, photonics and imaging. They are honored for their technical
achievement, for their service to the general optics community and to SPIE in
particular.
"The annual recognition of Fellows provides an opportunity for us to
acknowledge outstanding members for their service to the general optics
community," says Maria Yzuel, SPIE President.
Siahmakoun, a member of the Rose-Hulman faculty since 1987, specializes
in laser physics, photorefractive materials, nonlinear optics, optical signal
processing and microfabrication. He is director of Rose-Hulman's Micro-Nanoscale
Devices and Systems (MiNDS) facilities, and has conducted research in
semiconductor materials, microsensors and optical MEMS, applications of
photorefractive materials in WDM technologies, and fiber-optic communication and
RF-Photonics.
In 1999, Siahmakoun received the Rose-Hulman Board of Trustees
Outstanding Scholar Award for his scholarly activities that have led to the
development of new laboratory experiments and several federally-sponsored
research grants. He has directed a long list of undergraduate student research
projects and supported students conducting master's work in physics and optical
engineering.
"This year's Fellows are a very talented group representing a broad
range of optics and photonics technologies," said James Harrington, chair of the
2008 SPIE Fellows Committee.
Siahmakoun joins a list of over 500 SPIE Fellows that includes Charles
Joenathan, head of Rose-Hulman's Department of Physics and Optical Engineering,
and Brij Khorana, former department head and faculty member.
SPIE, founded in 1955, serves the interests of its more than 188,000
active constituents representing 138 different countries. The organization acts
as a catalyst for collaboration among technical disciplines for information
exchange, continuing education, publishing opportunities, patent precedent, and
career and professional growth. As the organizer and sponsor of approximately
25 major conferences and education programs annually in North America, Europe,
Asia, and the South Pacific, SPIE provides publishing, speaking, and learning
opportunities on emerging technologies.
