Brian Dyer, director of alumni affairs, also presented Yager with a
special alumni award. The dinner was attended by all members of this
year’s residence hall staff.
Yager, a 1989 mathematics graduate, served as a Resident
Assistant (1987-89) and a Sophomore Advisor (1986-87). He received the
Clarence P. Sousley Award as Rose-Hulman’s top graduating mathematics
student (1989), was a founding member of the college’s Pi Kappa Alpha
fraternity chapter and a member of the Blue Key National Honor Society.
At Allstate Insurance, Yager manages the operations for
900 agents, 150 regional employees and over two million policies (worth
$1.6 billion in premiums) in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. From his
office in Buffalo Grove, Ill., Yager is responsible for profit and
growth in those states as well as strategic and operational decisions.

Yager earned the “Good Hands” Award for Outstanding
Community Service (1991), was named the New Employee of the Year in the
Auto Pricing Department (1989) and Employee of the Year in the Auto
Pricing Department (1990), and has received the Industrial Grand
Challenge Award (2003) from the National Center for Super Computing
Applications. He has also filed two patents in the area of systems and
methods for customizing insurance.
Yager has also been an assistant vice president for
research and development (2004-05), senior actuary (1998-2004) and
director of personal lines automobile actuarial research (1997-98). He
has been named a Fellow in the Casualty Actuarial Society and is a
member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He earned a master’s in
business administration, with honors, from the University of
Illinois-Chicago (2003).
“Working as a Resident Assistant helped me to develop
several leadership characteristics which have helped me in my
post-graduate career. I learned to work with a staff of peers and that I
was not necessarily ‘alone’. There were others I could count on, share
ideas with, and work with to solve issues,” Yager states. “One of the
greatest skills I learned was listening. I also learned how to balance
being friendly with those on the floor but also being able to enforce
the rules and hold them accountable for behaviors, and respectfulness,
treating others as you would like to be treated.”
