Computer Science, Software Engineering & Civil Engineering Students Expand International Boundaries of Design Projects
Rose-Hulman

Computer science, software engineering and civil engineering students will have international experiences this school year while working on design projects in Sweden, Pakistan and Ghana.

This week, six Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology computer science and software engineering students have traveled to Uppsala, Sweden, to begin collaborations with colleagues from Uppsala University on a joint project to develop an Internet-based health care account for hospital patients.

The international design project is part of a Computing in a Global Society course being taught this fall quarter by Cary Laxer, head of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering.  Students in the group are Aaron Blankenbaker, Derek Hammer, Thomas Kleeman, Daniel Knight, Isaac Lee and Daniel Sabin.

On Monday, Sept. 15, several student groups made presentations about the project and participated in a guest lecture by Helena Bernáld, who specializes in cross-cultural communication.  She is a Swede by birth, but has lived in the United Kingdom for several years and has spent time in the United States as well.   The students conducted small group exercises and had a pizza party.

This is the fifth year that Rose-Hulman students have worked with Uppsala University students on design projects to develop software for medical devices that could be used by physicians and health care professionals at Uppsala's medical center.

Meanwhile, this year's senior-year capstone design projects in civil engineering will have students designing a water supply system in Pakistan and warehouse facilities in Ghana.

Elders for the Pakistan village of Shah Maidan have petitioned the regional Capital Development Authority for authority to make a tie-in to one of the large 72-inch main water pipelines that extend from a government dam/reservoir.  A team of five students will design the branch tie-in and branch water line of approximately one mile length, navigating through steep, rocky terrain.  A concrete water storage tank, able to contain 40,000 gallons, will also be designed.

The Pakistan student design project team includes Elizabeth Beller, Stuart Berry, Justin Butz and Tim Sliwinski.  The faculty mentor is Martin Thomas.

The Ghana Cocoa Board wishes to develop and improve cocoa storage facilities in the village of Kumasi.  A team of five students will design warehouse facilities, pavement, parking and traffic planning, drainage, water supply and wastewater treatment --- taking into account regional materials and construction techniques.  The team will be working with colleagues from Ghana’s University of Science & Technology.

The design project team includes Justin Byrd, Maritza Gonzalez, Megan Hochstedler, Andrew Pinkstaff and Dustin Whalen.  The faculty mentor is John Aidoo, native of Ghana and a graduate of the country's University of Science & Technology.

Past international civil engineering experiences have had students completing projects in Trinidad, Sudan and Ghana.

Also, this year, three exchange students from Brazil will be working on three separate capstone projects while taking classes at Rose-Hulman.  The Brazilian students are studying civil engineering, environmental engineering and architecture in South America.

The Department of Civil Engineering’s senior design program is coordinated by Jim Hanson.  Other faculty mentors are Robert Houghtalen, Sue Niezgoda, Michael Robinson, Kevin Sutterer and Hanson.
