Six Students Vying to be Crowned Rose-Hulman Queen

Three seniors and three juniors have been elected finalists to be crowned homecoming queen of this year’s Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology homecoming. The winner will be announced Friday night, Oct. 6, during a pep rally and will reign over activities on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The finalists are Jill DeClerk, a junior chemical engineering major from Palatine, Ill.; Jennifer Frey, a senior chemical engineering major from Harrison, Ohio; Bridget Mayer, a senior applied biology and chemistry major from Colorado Springs, Colo.; Brittany McGowan, a junior biomedical engineering major from Gurnee, Ill.; Erin O’Connor, a senior biomedical engineering major from Louisville, Ky.; and Samantha Sheets, a junior biomedical engineering major from Milford, Ohio.

Sixteen students were nominated for this year’s contest, which is organized by the Blue Key National Honor Society. Online elections conducted last week narrowed the field to the six finalists. Final elections will be conducted by students on Thursday, Oct. 5.

Jill DeClerk was nominated by the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. She is president of the Circle K service organization, and is a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma chemistry fraternity, Blue Key, varsity cross country team and ballroom dancing club. The dean’s list student received the Department of Chemical Engineering’s Noel Moore Achievement Award for 2005-06 and plans a career in the pharmaceutical or consumer product safety industry.

Jennifer Frey, the nominee of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, is a resident assistant, vice president of the Student Government Association and co-captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. She is also a leader of the career fair organization team and is serving as recruitment chair of the Chi Omega sorority. She plans to work as a process engineer after graduation.

Bridget Mayer is a resident assistant, and a member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Chi Omega and Panhellenic Council. She was named a Guidant Applied Life Sciences Scholar in 2005-06 and plans to attend veterinary school after graduation. She was nominated by SWE. In her free time, Mayer enjoys hiking in Colorado and hot air ballooning with her family.

Nominated by the Apartments-West residence hall, Brittany McGowan is secretary of Circle K and Rose Chorus, and is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta academic fraternity, drama club and concert band. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in biomedical engineering.

Erin O’Connor, nominated by the Adelphia organization, is a resident assistant and former sophomore advisor on Rose-Hulman’s residence life staff. She is also a member of the cycling club, Resident Hall Association and ballroom dancing club. She was a member of the varsity swimming team for three years and now runs on the cross country team. O’Connor combined her athletic interests to form a triathlon group last spring. She will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force next spring and will have four years of active duty after graduation.

Samantha Sheets was nominated by the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She has been social chair of the group for the past two years. She is also co-captain of the dance team, is a member of the varsity softball team, biomedical engineering society and SWE, and is studying for a minor in mathematics. She hopes to work for a biomedical instrumentation company or attend graduate school. Her homecoming escort is Tyler Anderson, a junior from Terre Haute.

Other students nominated for the homecoming queen contest were Sabre Evans, a freshman mechanical engineering major from Indianapolis; Ashley Harris, a senior biomedical engineering major from Indianapolis; Mandy Hecker, a senior mechanical engineering major from Georgetown, Ind.; Chandra Lesniak, a junior applied biology and biomedical engineering major from Wichita, Kan.; and Rachel Selby, a junior chemistry major from Crawfordsville.
